Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better than the general public by the name of Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper and acrobat. In film, music and on television, Queen Latifah has received 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born in and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. an officer in the police force. Latifah's parents divorced at the age of 10. Latifah attended Catholic school in Newark the state of New Jersey. She was also raised by her family's Baptist Church. In her early twenties when her mother gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah that means tender and gentle in Arabic. Latifah has always been tall and tall. Standing 5'10" and was the center forward on her high school basketball team. She sang "Home" from The Wiz in a performance at her highschool. Latifah became a beatboxer for the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was one of those who were part of the first form of Flavor Unit which at that time consisted of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created a demo of the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He handed the recording over to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah after hearing the song. Her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
